There are plenty of places within easy day-trip range of Amsterdam, a selection of which we cover in this chapter. Heading out of the city for a day (or two) will enable you to discover the Netherlands on a different level, whether climbing inside a windmill, walking along a historic canal that inspired the young Rembrandt, or eating pancakes in a pastoral village.
Some of the excursions covered below are served by coach tours (ask for details at the tourist office, for more information, click here), although you can also find your own way by bus, train, bicycle or rented car.
